Icy Emperor Emperor Penguin Aptenodytes forsteri. Gould Bay, Weddell Sea, Antarctica. Sue Flood, United Kingdom. Category: Attention to Detail. COMMENDED. Photographer’s Story: ‘I took this shot in the Gould Bay Emperor Penguin colony in the Weddell Sea in November 2016. I wanted to show the exquisite detail on the head of this Emperor Penguin adult, which stood on its own, ice crystals lying on its feathers in temperatures of about -25°C. I loved the subtle colours of the incredible plumage. It was the most beautiful creature that I’ve ever photographed.’ Canon EOS 5DS with Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens. 263mm focal length; 1/400 second; f/9; ISO 160. Handheld.
